Drug Addiction Treatment
People who suffer from drug addiction are often referred to as drug addicts or junkies. There is a great deal of extra stigma attached to being a drug addict, mostly because drugs are illegal in the UK. This illegal element to drug addiction often encourages the drug user to become very withdrawn, secretive and defensive. Hiding drug addiction from parents or loved ones often makes the addicted person become dishonest and manipulative.
Their behaviour will vary depending on what substance they are addicted to and the depth of their addiction. The various drugs and combinations they use, mixed with their personal situations will decide the reaction that they have. It may appear that all drug users have different problems based on their external experience. We are very much of the opinion that the addicted person’s problems centre in their mind. All their external problems, including their drug taking, are merely symptoms of this atypical and malformed mental condition.
If their usage has progressed to the stage of full-blown addiction, nothing will be more important to that person than their drug of choice. Whether it’s children, family or anything that under normal circumstances would seem reasonable, including their own survival.
In our experience, once they have crossed the line and lost control of their use, they may not be ready or able to accept they have become completely drug dependent. There is no way at this point for a drug addict to return to controlled use and they are now under the control of this awful mental obsession that is drug addiction.
Unfortunately, the reality of their situation is only accepted after years of unhappy experiences, countless broken promises to stop and endless bail outs. Often with all the best will and love in the world, helping an addict overcome their problems tends to make them worse and not better. It’s not anyone’s fault, it’s just one of those problems that everyday common sense, great advice and support won’t help! Sadly, the addicted person is beyond that kind of help, their mind has become twisted and it’s going to need a special kind of treatment to straighten it out. That’s where we come in.
