COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY & NEUROSCIENCE

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is recognised as the most widely utilized orthodox therapeutic model for the treatment of alcoholism and addiction.

CBT’s efficacy is underpinned by much scientific and empirical data and is normally the primary form of counselling that is promoted and prescribed by both the NHS and private healthcare services. CBT is based on the premise that a person’s thoughts directly influence their feelings and behaviour.

-- Epictetus, Enchiridion, 5

Men are disturbed not by things, but the views which they take of them

CBT can be an extremely powerful therapeutic model and tool. However, CBT per se is not the solution for real alcoholism and substance addiction. Yet when key aspects of CBT are perfectly integrated into the 12 Step programme, a formidable Recovery solution is present. The ‘key’ to this formidable Recovery solution is how to integrate CBT into the 12 Step programme. ECR are renowned for their formidable Recovery solution because we use, teach and demonstrate the ‘key’ that brings the 12 Step programme into perfect harmony with the power of CBT.

Neuroscience

Over the last two to three decades the exploration of the human brain has provided remarkable insights into the behaviour and workings of the physical brain. In regards to alcoholics and addicts, neuroscience shows – using such techniques as functional magnetic resonance imaging or functional MRI (fMRI) – that the brains of alcoholics and addicts function in particular ways that can be very different to non-alcoholic/addict brains. Neuroscience also shows us that the brain itself can repair and develop when the right conditions exist.

-- Doidge, 2007; 6

The idea that the brain can change its own structure and function through thought activity is, I believe, the most important alteration in our view of the brain

ECR integrates the latest neuroscience understanding into its treatment programme and also presents regular talks on the ‘Brain of Addiction’ to families of alcoholics and addicts, as well as to other professionals. Every single time we present one of these talks to families, ECR receive almost identical feedback: “That makes perfect sense”, “that perfectly explains our experience” and “Why have we not been told this vital information before?”

ECR understand the ‘key’ elements of what neuroscience shows regarding alcoholism and addiction and the physical brain itself, and once again we demonstrate how ECR’s integrated Recovery solution perfectly reflects what technology is now able to clearly show.
