Our range of available therapies, delivered by a team of empathetic experts, are combined to create a bespoke recovery plan for each and every client to ensure they receive precisely the right support.
Our formidable recovery solution integrates Cognitive Behavioural, Person Centred and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy into the 12-step programme. An individual package of therapies, which may include group and one-on-one therapy, is tailored for each client (depending on focus and length of stay).
Cognitive behavioural therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is recognised as the most widely used therapeutic model for the treatment of alcoholism and addiction. It aims to help change the way you think (cognitive) and what you do (behaviour). Rather than looking at past causes, it focuses on current problems and practical solutions to help the client to feel better now.
CBT’s efficacy is underpinned by scientific and empirical data. It is usually the primary form of counselling that is promoted and prescribed by both the NHS and private health care services.
Person-Centred Therapy is one of the humanistic modalities founded by American psychologist, Carl Rogers, and is based on the view that everyone has the capacity and desire for personal growth and change, given the right conditions. Rather than directing the therapy, the therapist offers unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence to help the client come to terms with any negative feelings and to change and develop in their own way.
The Psychodynamic approach is derived from Psychoanalysis, which is based on the work of Sigmund Freud, but focuses on immediate problems to try to provide a quicker solution. It stresses the importance of the unconscious and past experience in shaping current behaviour.
A therapist will aim to build an accepting and trusting relationship – encouraging the client to talk about their childhood and other relationships. It also uses similar techniques to psychoanalysis, including free association, interpretation and especially transference, where feelings you experienced in previous significant relationships are projected onto the therapist. This kind of psychoanalysis is used to treat adjustment disorders, personality-related disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), all of which often present alongside addiction.
We are renowned for our recovery solution because we have, use, teach, and demonstrate the 12-step program working in perfect harmony with the power of Psychotherapy.
Over the last two to three decades the exploration of the human brain has provided remarkable insights into the behaviour and workings of the physical brain. In regards to alcoholics and addicts, neuroscience shows that the brains of alcoholics and addicts function in particular ways that can be very different to non-alcoholic/addict brains. Neuroscience also shows us that the brain itself can repair and develop when the right conditions exist.
We integrate the latest neuroscience understanding into its treatment programme and also present regular talks on the ‘Brain of Addiction’ to families of alcoholics and addicts, as well as to other professionals.
Overwhelming practical data confirms that when it comes to true alcoholism and substance addiction, the number one recovery solution worldwide is the 12-step programme. This is also our experiential position; this is what our personal and professional experience demonstrates time and time again.
It is not uncommon for clients to arrive for addiction treatment at ECR having already tried a 12-step programme in the past and decided that it doesn’t work for them. Our trained professionals have acquired a true and deep understanding of the phenomenally powerful 12-step programme, including all of the little-known psychological, physiological, emotional, and spiritual aspects.
